Dish photos without a studio day
Your phone, your plates, your room - photographed like a commission.
Booking a photographer for sixty dishes is a cost most Maltese kitchens only carry once, and the shots are stale by the next season. Qarta grades one phone photo per dish to your own light and surfaces, so the whole menu looks shot on the same afternoon - because it was.
- Light and background only - never the food
- Your original photo is always kept
- About 30 seconds per dish
The hard guardrail
We move the light, not the lunch
What the AI is allowed to do
Even out harsh midday light, correct the yellow cast of tungsten downlights, calm a busy tablecloth, and place the plate on the ambience surface you chose - a scrubbed timber table, a limestone ledge, a sunlit terrace.
What it is never allowed to do
Add prawns, plump a portion, invent garnish, change the sauce, or swap your plate for a prettier one. Your vessel and your portion are preserved, which is what keeps the photo honest at the table.

Questions
Dish photography FAQ
- Does this replace a professional food photographer?
- For a working menu of thirty to sixty dishes, yes. A photographer is still the right call for a hero campaign, a cookbook or a press shot. What Qarta replaces is the impossible part: keeping a full menu photographed as specials rotate and prices change through the season.
- What does the AI actually change in my photo?
- Lighting, colour balance, and the surface behind the plate. That is the whole list. It never adds, removes or reshapes food, and it never swaps your vessel - the plate the dish arrives on is the plate the guest sees. We also keep your original photo untouched so you can always go back.
- Why do you ask for photos of my dining room?
- Because a generic dark-slate stock look does not match a bright Sliema terrace. During setup you pick an ambience that matches your room, and your own plates, tables and light become the reference the grading follows. The result reads as your restaurant, not a template.
- How do I shoot a dish so it works?
- Straight down or at a slight angle, near a window if you can, no flash, plate centred, phone steady. The app walks you through it dish by dish and shows the polished result within about half a minute, so you can retry immediately if the framing was off.
- What does it cost compared with a shoot?
- A half-day of food photography in Malta typically runs into several hundred euro before styling, and covers a fixed shot list. Qarta is EUR 39.90 per month with a credit for each polished photo included in the plan, and you can re-shoot a dish the day the recipe changes.
- Will guests feel misled by an enhanced photo?
- That is exactly why the guardrail exists. Because only light and background move, the portion, garnish and plating on screen are the ones leaving your kitchen. Enhanced photos are also flaggable by diners, and we act on reports.
